Cohesive devices

Cohesive devices are tools used to link ideas, sentences, and paragraphs together.

They are essential to make the written information comprehensible and unified.

Transition words or phrases play a major role in writing as they link ideas between sentences and paragraphs.

The most common cohesive devices are conjunctions. They join words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence.

Examples of conjunctions are and, but, or. Comparisons and contrasts, as well as the repetition of key words and phrases also help to create cohesion.

Pronouns are another type of cohesive device as they replace nouns and refer back to the nouns or ideas used previously in the text.

Of course, there are also linking phrases such as for example, on the other hand, and in addition which joins two ideas together.

All of these devices come together to create a written piece of work which flows from one idea, sentence, and paragraph to another.
